Interlaken is a tourist capital of the Bernese Oberland (Bernese Highland) region. Cable cars railway connects the city with mountain villages and spectacular sights, including the famous snowy peak of the Jungfrau.

Best Places to Visit in Switzerland Tour

This “city between lakes” (located between lakes Thun and Brienz) has been a resort area for 300 years. At first, it was only a summer resort, but over time it turned into a year-round platform for tourists, according to their interests, depending on the time of year. In winter, skiers can take advantage of lower prices, when all other ski resorts are overcrowded with tourists.

The lowest season is January-February. The most expensive time to visit is mid-summer.

HOW TO REACH – Interlaken is connected by railway with Bern and Lucerne. The stretch in the direction of Lucerne is part of the “Golden Pass” panoramic route.  You can check the timetable and prices on the official website.

Sightseeing

  1. Höheweg Park

This is 14 hectares of land in the city center, between two railway stations. It was originally owned by Augustinian monks, but in the mid-19th century was bought by local hotel owners and turned into a park.

  1. Augustinian monastery

The monastery was founded in Interlaken in 1130 but was closed during the Reformation. The ruins of the monastery can be seen in the city’s central park.

  1. Unterseen

In Unterseen you can admire the parish church with a late Gothic tower dating from 1471. This is one of the most photographed landmarks in the Bernese Oberland region: the Jungfrau peak rises to the right, and Mönch to the left from the tower.

  1. Harder Kulm

Harder Kulm is a peak with an altitude of 1301 m, offering a beautiful view of the Alps and two lakes, Thun and Brienz. You can get there by a funicular which departs from the Interlaken East railway and costs for 25 francs. The way will take about 15 minutes.

Best Places to Visit in Switzerland Tour

No visit to Switzerland is complete with spending some time in the country’s adventure capital, Interlaken. Aside from its beautiful location at the foot of the Bernese Alps and on the shores of both Lake Thun and Lake Brienz, Interlaken offers an incredible number of things to do.

Your first destination should be Harder Kulm which can be reached by a funicular.  At the summit, the views from the Two Lakes Bridge are spectacular, and you’re likely to see the sky dotted with colorful parachutes.

Paragliding, bungy jumping and canyoning are just some of the extreme sports available in Interlaken but if you prefer less exhilarating pursuits you won’t feel left out. Click here to book beautiful paragliding experience in Interlaken.

Lake cruises and a ride around town on a horse-drawn tram are two of the more relaxing ways to spend your time in Interlaken.  There are plenty of opportunities to shop for Swiss souvenirs and sample the traditional cuisine, too.

There are many things to do in Interlaken like enjoying excursions to many nearby mountains.  The Jungfraujoch, Schilthorn, Schynige Platte, and Grindelwald-First are just a few mountains that can be visited by train, funicular, or cable car from Interlaken.

TIP: If you plan on doing more than one mountain excursion, consider purchasing the Jungfrau Travel Pass as it can provide great savings. Book your Jungfraujoch round train trip tickets in advance.

HOW TO REACH –  Situated just an hour from Bern and around 90-minutes from Zurich, Interlaken can be easily reached by either car or train.

THUN | Best Places to Visit in Switzerland Tour

CLICK HERE TO BOOK HOTELS IN THUN

Best Places to Visit in Switzerland Tour

One of the prettiest towns in Switzerland is Thun – located on the southern shores of Lake Thun. It is a perfect day trip from Interlaken, as it is easy to get there from Interlaken (and it’s a beautiful bus ride or card drive along the lake) and a perfect place to spend a day.

Thun is small and you will be able to see the highlights of the city within a few hours – but also plan some time to unwind at Aare River and for a boat tour on stunning Lake Thun. Taking day trips to Thun is considered as one of the best day trips from Interlaken.

In Thun, you should not miss strolling the beautiful old town and pay attention to the colorful houses. Especially the town hall square is lovely – from there you will also see the white and impressive Thun Castle. For an entry fee of about $11 (or free with a Swiss Travel Pass), you can enter it and learn about the history and enjoy the best view of the city (this alone is so worth it).

Enjoy your lunch at Mühleplatz and relax and the Aare River before walking to the Lake Thun boat station.

HOW TO REACH – Because a cruise on Lake Thun is a must – while Lake Brienz has a more interesting color, cruising Lake Thun is probably the best boat cruise you can take. From Thun to Interlaken it takes about two hours by boat – you will see many gorgeous villages along your way and it is a perfect way to end your day!

MURREN – SCHILTHORN | Best Places to Visit in Switzerland Tour

View from the Schilthorn

Mürren is a very small car-free town located above Lauterbrunnen and Interlaken in the Swiss Alps. The views will captivate you and the charm of the locals will make you want to stay forever.

It is most well known for the incredible Piz Gloria Schilthorn attraction rewarding visitors with unobscured views of the famous Jungfrau, Eiger, and Mönch peaks. The Schilthorn is where the James Bond movie, On Her Majesty’s Secret Service, was filmed and the entire place is James Bond-themed which makes the visit even more fun. If you’re hungry, make sure to check out their revolving Piz Gloria restaurant which boasts jaw-dropping 360-degree views and slowly turns so you’re sure to see the entire 360-degree view while you eat.

HOW TO REACH SCHILTHORN – To get to the Schilthorn, head to the Murren gondola station located on the opposite side of town as the train station.

Best Places to Visit in Switzerland Tour

TIPS –  It’s highly recommended not to pre-purchase tickets since the weather can affect the views at the top. There is a live stream of the view from the top of the Schilthorn at the gondola station to help you decide whether it will be worth the cost to go up.

Hiking is another activity you do not want to miss while visiting Mürren. We loved hiking on the trails to Winteregg and to the even smaller town of Gimmelwald. Be sure to check out the Biergarten in Gimmelwald and grab a pint after your exhausting hike!

HOW TO REACH  MURREN – Getting to Mürren is a bit difficult, but the journey is completely worth it. Starting from Interlaken, purchase a regional train ticket from the Interlaken Ost station to Lauterbrunnen. Be sure you’re at the correct station because there are two in Interlaken.

Best Places to Visit in Switzerland Tour

From the Lauterbrunnen station, take the gondola up to Grütschalp. Once you reach Grütschalp, hop in the cogwheel train (Lauterbrunnen-Mürren mountain railway (BLM)) which will take you all the way to the Mürren train station (end of the line).

Best Places to Visit in Switzerland Tour

Basel is an incredible medieval city that is a wonder to explore. It is filled with unique activities for young and old and any visitor could easily spend a week in this amazing city. No visit to Basel is complete without a visit to the Basel Munster. This historic church rests on the shores of the Rhine River. If you can, climb the Munster tower for amazing views of both sides of the river. While visiting Basel, make sure to wander the Old Town and visit the thriving Marktplatz, take a Rheinfahre (small open top boat) across the Rhine, hop on a day cruise to visit the Dreilaendereck, the three corners where Switzerland, France, and Germany meet and stop into the world-renowned Basel Zoo.

While you’re in Basel, make sure to enjoy a few of its many museums. Basel has more museums than any other city in Switzerland and many are free or discounted with the Basel Card or a Swiss train pass. Our favorites are the Basler Papiermuseum (paper mill museum), the Kunstmuseum (fine arts), Naturhistorisches Museum Basel (natural history), and the Tinguely Museum (modern art).

Finally, don’t forget to seek out the wonderful fountains and basilisks that can be found throughout the city. It would make a great find-and-seek experience for the kids (and adults too!)

Along with all these year-round activities, if visiting in the summer you should also consider swimming in the Rhine with the locals, taking in an FC Basel match, and attending the world-renowned Basel Tattoo!

HOW TO REACH – Basel Switzerland rests on the corner of Switzerland, France, and Germany which makes it one of the most easily accessible Swiss cities. It can be easily reached by train or air and is a regular stop for river cruises. The EuroAirport Basel Mulhouse Freiburg services Basel and allows an easy arrival from almost anywhere in Europe. The Basel train station is a major station with two arrival areas: one servicing SBB Swiss trains and Deutsche Bahn German trains and the other servicing TGV French trains.

The capital city of Switzerland with many historic and government monuments. Located on banks of Aare river this city has historic importance since the 12th century.  The top-most attractions of this city are Zytglogye – a Mechanical clock & astrolabe. This area is the most photogenic location of Bern. You can also visit the Swiss Parliament building, the cathedral of Bern, walking tours in historic Old town.

Switzerland tour Guide

You can see this mechanical clock in the old town area featured in Bollywood’s famous song – “Mein koi aisa geet gaaoon,  kee aarzoo ” filmed on Bollywood’s top performers – Shahrukh Khan & Juhi Chawla.

HOW TO REACH – Can be reached easily through air, rail or road as it is located in the heart of this country. I took a day trip to Bern from Interlaken by Swiss rail. As the train station is located in the heart of the city in an old town, I did most of the tour by walking.  After that, for internal commuting, I interchanged buses and trams.

RIDE THE GLACIER EXPRESS TRAIN | Best Places to Visit in Switzerland Tour

Best Places to Visit in Switzerland Tour

One of the must do things in Switzerland is to take a scenic train ride across the country. Big bright panoramic suck you into the Swiss landscape like an IMAX movie as the train slowly rocks you like a lullaby.

To enjoy this experience to the max, I recommend taking the Glacier Express Train from Zermatt to St. Moritz. Connecting these glitch ski-villages, the Glacier Express has also dubbed the slowest express train in the world.

It takes you from Zermatt and the mountains of the Matterhorn, over bridges, across tunnels, valleys, and over mountains to the other side of Switzerland to the posh ski resort of St. Moritz. Sit back in your luxury leather seat, as lunch is prepared on board and served at your seat. Order a glass of champagne for the ultimate luxury experience. Put your nose to the glass to admire the green valleys with typical Swiss cows roaming around near Andermatt. Admire the view at the highest pass of Oberalp at 2.044 meters (6,706ft) altitude and pick your jaw back up from the ground when you gross the UNESCO heritage listing of the Landwasser viaduct. You can also stop over the at Ilanz for the winter holiday in valley of Light – Val Lumnezia.

When you arrive after 8 hours on the Glacier Express, you’ll feel like a different person. Someone who not only crossed the country by train but experienced the biggest highlights of Switzerland like a movie. The Glacier Express runs year-round but with adapted departure times in winter. Click here to book Glacier Express in advance.

HOW TO REACH – You can start in Zermatt or in St. Moritz or Chur and you can take the Glacier Express in both directions.

TIPS – Reservation is mandatory in advance

PORTES DU SOLEIL SKI TOWNS | Best Places to Visit in Switzerland Tour

Best Places to Visit in Switzerland Tour

Champéry, Morgins, Torgon, Les Crosets, and Champoussin are five ski resorts part of the huge Portes du Soleil domain, with over 600km of pistes in Switzerland and France. There’s no better way to explore these fairy tale winter wonderland villages than spending a few days on an Alpine ski chalet. However, they can also be part of a larger Swiss trip.

HOW TO REACH – You can drive to any of them or take a train from Geneva to Champéry (via Aigle) that will take you there in less than 3 hours. Once there, get out of Champéry train station and right in front of it, you will see the Champéry lift ready to take you up to Croix-de-Culet, Planachaux and beyond.

TIPS –

  • If you happen to be there from late Spring to early Winter, you will be able to move from one town to the next one by car or public transport.
  • If you visit the area in Winter or early Spring and you are a fan of Winter sports, a one-day ski pass will let you ski or snowboard the whole area; making things such as having breakfast in one village and lunch in another, possible and so much fun. Get your wallet ready, though, it’s Switzerland after all!

MONTREUX | Best Places to Visit in Switzerland Tour

Best Places to Visit in Switzerland Tour

Montreux, also known as part of the Swiss Riviera, is a stunning resort town, tucked between Lake Geneva and the steep hills of the Alps.

CLICK HERE TO BOOK HOTELS IN MONTREUX

The town of Montreux is mostly famous for its Queen memorials. It’s no secret that Queen loved the place and recorded many of their albums in a studio in Montreux, which is nowadays turned into a tourist attraction, completely free of charge for its visitors. Apart from the studio, a beautiful Freddie Mercury statue is standing on the lakeside in memory of his presence in the city.

Another must-see attraction in Montreux is the Chillon Castle – a stunning medieval fortress, located on the Lake Geneva. The castle holds centuries of history and countless interesting stories, which can be revealed to you by visiting the castle and getting an audio guide. There are many beautiful things to do in Montreux and even many scenic train rides to nearby countryside towns/villages.

TIP – According to local laws, if you’re staying in a hotel or a hostel in Montreux, you’re entitled to a free public transport card for the duration of your stay, including discounts for most tourist attractions. Make use of this privilege, as it is going to save you a lot of money during your visit!

HOW TO REACH – It is easily reachable by train, as the train station is conveniently located in the city. Driving there is also a great option if you are commuting by car. The nearest airports are Geneva Airport and Lausanne Airport. You can also catch a Golden Pass train from Lucerne to Montreux which passes along the most popular scenic route in this country.

LUGANO | Best Places to Visit in Switzerland Tour

Best Places to Visit in Switzerland Tour

One of the must-visit places in Switzerland is the city of Lugano. Among 1,500 lakes that Switzerland possesses Lugano offers fascinating views of the Lugano Lake and the Alps.

A city situated in the extreme south of the country near the border of Italy, where a huge percentage of locals speak Italian (yes I’ve witnessed it).

People come to visit Lugano mostly because of it’s the picturesque view of Lake Lugano and the rest of the mountains including Monte San Salvatore.

It is an ideal place as well for outdoor and indoor activities during summer or even in fall and winter.

There are tons of things to do when you visit Lugano; a stroll in the city’s Parco Civico, visit the Swiss Miniature Village, and Gandria (lakeside village at the foot of Monte Brè) which were highly recommended by locals.

For art and exhibition lovers, you can check out the Cantonal Art Museum, Hermann Hesse Museum, and the Museum of Modern Art.

For highly active visitors or those who prefer an intensive activity, you can also do mountain biking, boating, and one of my favorites Hiking.

SPECIAL RECOMMENDATION – Let’s not forget the famous Monte San Salvatore where you can enjoy the 360 panoramic views of the city, lakes, and mountains surrounding it.

I personally recommend you to visit Monte San Salvatore (which I enjoyed visiting), you have to take the funicular to reach the top.

HOW TO REACH  – The easiest one day trip to get to Lugano is via car and train. Hop a train to Lugano from Milan, Geneva, Zurich, or Basel. If you are on vacation near these cities then, you should probably check out the schedules of the train.

Another way to reach the city is via Lugano-Agno airport, a small international airport which you can also book a connecting flight if you are traveling around Italy, England, France, and Germany.

LAUSANNE | Best Places to Visit in Switzerland Tour

Best Places to Visit in Switzerland Tour

Lausanne is the capital of the canton of Vaud in Switzerland. It is also referred to as the Olympic capital because the International Olympic Committee is headquartered here.

The Olympic Museum is the main attraction in the town and not without reason because it is a unique museum that is spread over three levels each dedicated to a certain aspect of the Olympic Games. In addition to the museum (which, in my opinion, needs more than one visit to experience it fully) visitors can also enjoy the landscaped parks and terraces and the collection of sculptured dotted throughout the premises. Whether you are an Olympic lover or not, you are sure to enjoy this lovely town in Switzerland. So, don’t forget to include it in your next holiday as it has many things to do.

TIP –  The first thing you need to do after arriving in Lausanne is pick up the Lausanne Transport Card which offers free public transport and discounts (at several museums and shops) for the duration of your stay. Armed with the Lausanne Transport Card, it is now time to check out the must-see places in the town – Lausanne Cathedral, Museum Historique de Lausanne (which offers a wonderful insight into the town’s past), Castle Saint-Maire, Old Academy, Charles Bridge, Collection de l’Art Brut, Oucy Quays, Elysee Museum, and the Olympic Museum and Park.

HOW TO REACH –  Lausanne has been gaining popularity among tourists because of its excellent and easy-to-reach location. You can arrive in the city by train, boat or car. If you prefer to fly in, then the airports in Geneva (45 minutes by train) and Zurich (two and a half hours by train) are the two options.

LEUKERBAD | Best Places to Visit in Switzerland Tour

Best Places to Visit in Switzerland Tour

One of the must-visit places in Switzerland, when you want to be in the mountains but not somewhere full of foreigners, is Leukerbad. Located in the Swiss Alps at 1,402 meters and surrounded by higher peaks, this place is perfect in winter when you want to see some snow. It’s also full of fun summer activities so any time of year is great.

The best thing to do here is to get out and enjoy nature! In snow, there is skiing and sledding right on the edge of town. You can also cable car up to the Gemmi Pass and ski from here. In summer, you can hike in these areas, and year-round there are enjoyable views over the Alps including the Matterhorn.

Leukerbad is famous for its thermal springs and these are also very enjoyable. Leukerbad Therme is home to ten thermal baths of varying temperatures and I recommend visiting every day that you are in town. Sitting in the outside thermal baths surrounded by snow is quite surreal.

HOW TO REACH – The best way to visit Leukerbad is via your own wheels or bus. There is no train stop here. We found it very easy to drive here even in winter. Once you are in Leukerbad, it’s easy to walk everywhere.

GRUYERES | Best Places to Visit in Switzerland Tour

Best Places to Visit in Switzerland Tour

If you’re visiting Lausanne or Montreux, a fantastic day trip is to go and see the small medieval town of Gruyères.

Gruyères, of course, is famous for its Gruyères cheese so a tour around the La Maison du Gruyere is a must.  It’s easy to get there as the factory is located just across the road from the Gruyères train station.

Once you have done that, take the bus (which leaves from outside the train station) up the hill to stroll through the tiny medieval village and on to the Castle of Gruyeres.  Take the self-guided walk around the castle before heading back through the village.

In the village, you can stroll through the little gift stores, and visit the Tibet Museum and the HR Giger Museum.  You can also have a bite to eat at the HR Giger Bar – at the very least go in for a peak -its décor is based on the movie “Aliens” and it really must be seen to believe.

From there take the bus back down to the train station and take the train to Broc-Fabrique.  From here it’s a short walk to the Maison Cailler – home to Cailler chocolate.  Take the chocolate factory tour and enjoy eating unlimited amounts of chocolate.  Click here to book chocolate factory tour with tasting and many museums tour too from Geneva.

HOW TO REACH – From Lausanne, it’s only 1 hour and 15 minutes by train or 1 hour and 40 minutes from Montreux.  It’s super easy to do it by yourself, or if you happen to be visiting during the months of May through to October take the Chocolate train which is a guided tour around the main attractions

In summer, cool off in the lake alongside many of the locals, or when the weather is a bit chillier explore the nooks and crannies around the town or even go shopping for one of the country’s famous watches. 7. I feel I have only touched upon Switzerland. Have been to a few of these destinations but have missed so many. Loved Thun in this list. It looks so quaint and gorgeous. Wish I can get to it sometime!

  8. Switzerland is really a very beautiful country and I appreciate the way you reflected its beauty through your article. The places you mentioned are really very beautiful. This article is very helpful and inspiring.
    THANK YOU

  9. Switzerland is such a beautiful country. You sure covered a lot of interesting places to visit here. My favorite part of this lovely country are the villages, snow, fresh air and the rural life.

  10. I’ve always wanted to visit Switzerland so I’ll definitely bookmark this guide! Interlaken is high on my list. I also love skiing with my family so I’d first visit Switzerland in the winter.

  11. Wow, this is a really comprehensive guide. Each town looks so beautiful that I know I would have a hard time trying to pick one or two! That is really awesome that this beautiful country was both your first foreign trip as well where you had your honeymoon! Thanks for sharing, I’ll be referring to this post if I ever get the opportunity to visit 🙂

    1. Thanks Kevin, and yes Switzerland is something special and very close to my heart due to those 2 reasons.

  12. I wanted to go to Switzerland so badly when I was in Germany, but I could never find enough time to dedicate to the country. As we’ve read, there are just way too many great places to visit. Montreux is so beautiful and I’ve never heard about it before! I must add that to my to-do list!

  13. Switzerland is one of my favourite countries in the world. It’s actually the first European country our family travelled to. I love reading your post as it brings back so many fond memories of places we’ve visited. That said, there are so many yet to explore! We’ll definitely have to visit Leukerbad and Lugano on our next visit. I’d also love to take the Glacier Express train! Thanks so much for including us.
