Historical Tour of Udaipur

While I’ve been in love with the areas around the Himalayas for as long as I can remember, there’s something about Udaipur that I just can’t ignore, as I have done Historical Tour of Udaipur during my school days.  While it might be its fellow Rajasthani city of Jaipur that pulls in tourists with its forts, markets and museums, Udaipur’s authenticity gives it an edge in my eyes. In this article I will let you know about best places to visit in Udaipur, Rajasthan which has great historical importance and why it should be included in your backpacking India’s itinerary. 

A big part of that allure is Udaipur’s history. This is a city that’s weathered plenty of storms and always come out stronger for it – true Indian passion! And while photos from the past effortlessly show off the beauty of the City of Lakes, Udaipur’s story is as deep and intricate as those waters.

Of course, to truly delve into the history of Udaipur and unravel it would take a lifetime. Even the most thorough Udaipur travel guide could only scratch the surface. Still, knowing the history of places you visit gives great insight on any journey, so keep some of these facts close if you’re in the city.

The beginnings of Udaipur go as far back as the 1550s. Maharana Udai Singh, no doubt inspired by the interconnected lakes and the Aravali mountain range, chose to move his capital to this more secure and defensible area. The lakes gave plenty of water for his people and the natural forests and winding rivers provided fantastic natural defences.

Udaipur was founded in 1553 and grew rapidly. Much of its growth was related to defences that visitors to the city can still appreciate to this day. For instance, in the 1560s as the Mughal Empire cut its way across the Indian heartland, the city protected itself from their possible encroach with the construction of a six-kilometre wall with seven gates. When the Mughals finally arrived, the combination of man-made and natural defences was impossible to topple.

A beacon of peace

As word spread of how safe and prosperous Udaipur was, it grew over the generations. Maharana Udai Singh was said to have very generously offered land to nobles and merchants, while those of other classes and castes were similarly welcomed and able to establish homes.

As the Mughals faded and Udaipur joined hands with the influence of Sisodia, there was a long era of peace where the city was able to flourish relatively untroubled. It also enjoyed plenty of peace and quiet during the time of the British, yet today Udaipur has not only flourished in its independence but has also become a good place for tech start-ups. It’s so exciting to think how a city with such a deep past is playing an important role in India’s future.

Should your travels take you to Udaipur, definitely stop by the City Palace at its heart. This is where it all began after all, and it’s a vast testimony to one man’s vision. Today, it’s no longer just the playground of royalty and has become somewhere for us all to enjoy. Art, history and folklore are all to be found in these majestic walls.
