  2. A large green campus housing the temple of education inspires everyone. Thanks for this beautiful virtual tour. Reminds me of the iconic campus of my alma mater IIT KGP.

  3. 650 unique buildings in just one campus? I must say the students and the locals are super lucky to be there! It reminds me of my university in India which is centuries old and has palace like structure, I studied in those rooms and it feels great to be part of the heritage!

  4. I spent a few days visiting a friend at Duke University years ago, it’s fascinating how American colleges are such cities on their own, we don’t really have that in Europe or Australia… I like the idea of rubbing Lincoln’s nose, it’s an endearing symbol and if it brings good luck, why not?

  5. Wow, there is so much to see just at a university!! It’s so beautiful and historic, I really love that about a lot of universities in the US. It’s cool that it’s so big and a destination in its own right!

  7. It’s interesting to tour universities, I recently did it in Dublin and loved their library. I liked reading the fact about how students rub Lincoln’s nose for good luck hehe, back in our University days, we had similar rituals to ensure that we do well in our exams. I’ve never been to Illinois but seems like this would be a great place to visit, love the architecture of the uni too.

    1. Yes every University they have some funny rituals and we as a student used to believe in them a lot. After visiting such Universities, we really remember our college days too.

  9. This is such a comprehensive post and I had no clue about this tour and about 650 unique buildings spread across 9.9 square miles area. I loved to know how each statue or building has some significance in the life of the students. Rubbing the Lincoln rose is interesting. The amphitheater and the library looks amazing. As an engineer myself, it was good to see and know about the world’s top-ranked Engineering building.

  10. I never knew that you can take a campus tours of any university if your are not a member or a visitors. It seems like a great options for tourists from different parts of the world to get the exposure of how American universities work, I love the farland bell it still holds some traditional values but looks updated and the fact that with electric power it can tune out any music is just great.

  11. I do recall touring an old university in Vilnius but it’s not something I would have thought of in this Illinois. What an extensive campus with a lot to explore. I’m particularly interested that a big part of this campus is so agriculture focused, such as the round barns and marrow plots, so different from universities near me.

    1. Round barns and agricultural research of this University is also an unique feature here. Many great researches happened here.

  12. The University of Illinois Urbana Champaign campus is huge! I never think to take campus tours when I visit a campus, but it makes sense that you would since there is so much history there! I like the little bit about the students rubbing Lincoln’s nose for good luck. You can even see where the color is a bit worn.

  13. I do recall touring an old university in Vilnius but it’s not something I would have thought of in this case. Weekday an extensive campus but a lot to explore.

  14. It’s so interesting to get to see an American university like this. Despite having visited Illinois many times, I’ve only tended to stay in the Chicago area. The grounds of the University of Illinois Urbana Champaign are super pretty, and the architecture of the buildings is impressive too. I also like the statue of Lincoln, and you can see his nose has been rubbed many times!

    1. You noticed correctly about the nose part and yes it has been rubbed so many times that it is shining more. I guess students are trying their luck.

  15. I must admit some of your posts are just so educational as it shows us places in cities and towns which we would not normally think of visiting even if we were around. I was not aware of this absolutely stunning campus and wit all the architecture it is a must I think if you were in the area. I would love to send my son there some day if it was possible. What a magnificent place with more than 650 unique buildings across 9.9 square miles area. That is vast. Some great historic relevance and sentiments attached to this place including that of the grand master of USA Abraham Lincoln himself. Thanks for a very educational post. .

Sounds like the university of Illinois has a lot of history – I had no idea Lincoln was a past student, that’s quite a heritage to have. The architecture looks amazing, must be an inspiring place to study.

  18. It definitely is a beautiful and photogenic campus. I would want to visit in fall. It’s my favorite time to travel because of the orange/red trees! I love the Lincoln’s Nose, how unique!! Lots of pretty architecture too!

  19. I remember so many days touring universities when my son was looking at schools. But I am not sure we ever visited one that had 650 buildings across almost 10 square miles. I love the mix of old and new buildings. A serenade from 49 bells in the McFarland Tower would be magical. If I was a student, I would definitely rub Lincoln’s nose for good luck. And kiss my sweeetheart under the oil lamp for eternal love. Certainly some interesting spots on the University of Illinois Urbana Champaign.

      1. University of Illinois Urbana Champaign sounds like an interesting place. Never thought a campus tour could be so enlightening. Loved the fact that it is energy efficient in today’s world. The statue of Love sounds fun. Would definitely rub Lincoln’s nose got good luck.

      2. I too rubbed Lincoln’s nose and yes many parts of the campus are very enriching and beautiful too.

  20. I have never thought to visit a University and was quite curious when I began reading your post. So many notable buildings on this campus but what really drew my attention was the farm’s experimental research. Had no idea they produced the famous sweet corn. I would have guessed it was something Nebraska would have produced 🙂

    1. I was also not knowing about sweet corn before visiting here but then it reassured me as Illinois has many corn fields farms, especially this region.

  21. Here seems to be a lot of history and quite a bit to see at this university, but as a person who loves the looks of buildings, there seems to be a mixture of old and new here which I like. Never really walked around universitys before, can you do this in USA as a tourist?
